Video Game Cheating is Back

Updated: Apr 30, 2020

Video Game cheating is flashing again on the headlines and now this is a challenge set before Developers to tackle the cheaters entering the arena.

Cheating exists in Video Games as long as they have been around. Sometimes it’s used for making the game easier to play and sometimes to access something inaccessible in a game, but sometimes cheating in games can hamper other players too. In the past cheating mostly played a factor in making the game accessible and giving the player some extra powers or skills but with the rise of Online Multiplayer games cheating has become more of a problem than before.

Cheating in online multiplayer games can lead to undeserving winning streaks which can drive other deserving players to lower ranks. Also, with more gaming companies opting for a challenge based limited time reward method for new items in games Video Game cheating has gone up yet again as players use hacks to win the challenges to gain the rewards.

Games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, PUBG and Valorant have been hit with Hackers and Cheaters and the matches are being ruined for players by aimbots, wallhacks, etc.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been making headlines for banning over 70,000 Warzone Cheaters alone, Warzone being their free-to-download Battle Royale. Infinity Ward, the developers of Call of Duty, has been on the headlines now for stepping up against the Cheaters and have devoted extra resources to combat cheating by forcing suspected cheaters to play against each other.

Infinity Ward Stated, “Cheaters not welcomed in Call of Duty: Warzone. There's no place for cheating in games. Warzone has zero-tolerance for cheaters.”

Check out the Infinity ward Official Site for more details.

PUBG has also taken stringent measures to protect its players from Cheaters. Before briefing countermeasures for hacking and cheat programs, Executive producer Taeseok Jang admitted the company had "struggled against a relentless onslaught of cheat programs". Although PUBG has been criticised by its community for apparently doing little to fight to cheat, Taeseok Jang insisted work had gone on behind the scenes.

Taeseok Jang said, “The fight against cheat programs is never-ending and something we've been trying very hard to find a solution for.”

Similarly, Bungie, the company behind Destiny 2, has been standing up against Cheating and is taking strict actions towards the Cheaters. Its policy now states that teammates of Cheaters are no longer innocent.

Bungie stated, “We now reserve the right to restrict or ban any player who has benefitted from cheating, even if they didn't cheat themselves”

Read out the complete statement here.

Cheating breaks the way the game was supposed to be played and it ruins the immersive experience of the so many players playing in real-time. This is harmful, both for the Developers and the Gamers playing the game.

Also with the growing number of players in the Battle Royale segment of games, tackling Cheaters and Hackers is now more essential as well as more Challenging. The question now is what the Developers are going to do to tackle this game ruining tactic.
